The Maryland Public Mental Health System is now serving over 80,000 individuals.
Maryland’s suicide rate over the last 10 years has declined in every age group, most significantly among 15 to 24 years olds, while nationally rates showed an increase.
Maryland’s Public Mental Health System coordinates services through 20 Core Service Agencies, which serve all of the 24 jurisdictions.
Over 1,100 individuals were served through 31 MHA-approved Supported Employment Programs, increasing their employment options.
Statewide, Medicaid expenditures in FY2000 were approximately $3.0 billion. About 1% or $38.5 million was spent on St. Mary’s County residents.  Nearly $7 million was spent in St. Mary’s on mental health care.
Fifteen percent of Marylanders do not have health insurance.
Trends in St. Mary’s County:
  • The number of consumers is increasing.
  • Utilization by Medicaid consumers is increasing slightly but the Medicaid payer mix is decreasing slightly.
  • The average cost per consumer is increasing and consumers with dual diagnosis account for a disproportionate share of the cost.
  • The inpatient length of stay is decreasing and the rate of readmissions is fairly constant.
  • High cost consumers account for significant cost.
  • RTC services account for significant cost.
  • The proportion of African Americans and other minorities using Public Mental Health System services is greater than the proportion in the general population.
  • The Supported Employment Program is responding to needs of the consumers.
  • The number of general RRP beds is decreasing and the number of intensive RRP beds is increasing.
  • The need for and utilization of case management services is increasing.
The most significant prediction of mental health treatment success is the ability of a program to provide an empathetic, hopeful, continuous, and multi-faceted treatment through the course of multiple episodes.
Eight percent to nine percent of the general population is reported to suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.
Studies reveal that less than one-third of adults with a diagnosable mental disorder, and even a smaller proportion of children, receive any mental health services in a given year.
